Geography of Japan [日本の地理(にほんのちり)]

Japan is a island country located in far East Asia. Japan consists of four main islands(Honshū[本州(ほんしゅう)], Hokkaidō[北海道(ほっかいどう)], Kyūshū[九州(きゅうしゅう)], Shikoku[四国(しこく)]) & over 6,500 smaller islands. They constitute the Japanese Archipelago[日本列島(にほんれっとう)].
Honshū is the largest island in Japan and that is the 7th largest island in the world.

Japan is the 62nd largest country in the world and the population of Japan is about 127,000,000 that is the 10th largest in the world (in census 2015). The capital is Tōkyō(It is recognized as a word "Tokyo" internationally, but here I spelled as the correct pronunciation of "東京").

The Japanese Archipelago is surrounded by four seas that are the Pacific Ocean[太平洋(たいへいよう)], the Sea of Japan[日本海(にほんかい)], the East China Sea[東シナ海(ひがしシナかい)], the Sea of Ohotsk[オホーツク海]. And Japan has the 8th largest EEZ.

Geography of Japan

About 73% of Japan's land is mountainous and about 68% of that is forest, you may be surprised.
The highest mountain in Japan is Mt. Fuji[富士山(ふじさん)](3,776m).

Japan is located on the Pacific Rim of Fire[環太平洋造山帯(かんたいへいようぞうざんたい)] and there are many volcanoes. We have fertile lands & hot springs as a benefit of it. But volcanic eruptions & earthquakes have often occurred until now.

The most parts of Japan belong temperate zone, but summer in there is hot & humid. It's so uncomfortable. Okinawa, Amami Islands[奄美諸島(あまみしょとう)] in Kagoshima & Ogasawara Islands[小笠原諸島(おがさわらしょとう)] belong subtropical zone. Hokkaidō & mountainous areas in Honshū belong subarctic zone.

In winter, on the Sea of Japan coast, it snows almost everyday. The snow lies over 3m in the heaviest snowfall areas.
